Savoy Cinema - 3

Alverne House (Pascoe family; 1754), on Alverton Street had an extensive garden that stretched up the hill between 'new' Clarence Street (1829-1840) and Causewayhead; the grounds returned into Causewayhead, opposite the Friends Meeting House, with stables and a coach house. Before 1908 a Drill Hall was built, and this shows in the 1911 photograph of the laying of the electricity cables in Causewayhead. 'Drill Hall' appears on the 1908 OS map. To the upper side of the cinema is the courtyard that was once the stable and coachhouse of Alverne House. The rest of the grounds are now carpark, etc. It is my suspicion that the Drill Hall was built perhaps 1897, in line with the Victoria Jubilee, hence its name of Victoria Hall.
OS Map of 1875.
The site of the Drill hall and later Cinema, is marked with blue rings on the corners.
