To the side of the Pavilion is now a children's play area - I remember it being a Crazy Golf/putting area when I was young. Behind that are tennis courts and to the side of the courts is the bowling green. The green looks well cared for, but haven't seen anyone bowling there for a while when I've gone past - probably just because it's the wrong time - and of course, it's just been winter!
Oh, and I'm sure the lions had yellow/gold coloured poles behind/attached to them when I was a child but are no longer there. Anyone else remember that?
BOP I think you are right the current lions do not look like 'traditional' lions they are rather stylised. I also agree with Tabtab that they did have poles attached. Perhaps someone could come up with a photo of the originals?
The original lions had poles with lights on top (gas) they were removed and were supposed buried to keep them when they
were removing the railings at the start of world war 2 for possible munitions...during the war there was a Bofors anti air
craft gun positioned in that elevated portion of the prom.
There is another picture of this area in the snow, it shows the original colours; mostly a vivid yellow and red trim, I think. My uncle told me that the two were removed to restore them, then one was damaged and the remaining one was 'lost'; he worked for the town as a decorator.
Colours as seen on the Drinking Fountain

There is also a picture that my uncle took of the two lions, which is here somewhere, I cannot find it. It is of the 'terrace' outside the Pavilion, with the Winter Gardens Restaurant in the background. The lions are in the immediate foregound.
