Letter to Annie Johns

From the scrapbook of my Great Great Aunt, Annie Johns of St Loy.
To Mrs Johns, who by her brave conduct and quick wittedness saved the captain and crew of the SS South America, the enclosed is sent as a small token of admiration and appreciation by (Mrs) R Tyrell who read the account in the Morning Leader and is proud of her countrywoman.
9 Lyndale Place, London N....

I have no record of the nature of the enclosed token.
SOUTH AMERICA
Lawther,LattaandCo.; 1900; Short Bros.; 4,197 tons; 370-3 X 48-7x18-9; 389 n.h.p.; triple-expansion engines.
The British steamship South America was wrecked at St. Loy Cove, Mount s Bay, on March 13th, 1912, while on a voyage in ballast from Hamburg to Cardiff.

I don t know; this story had been lost to my family until Jim Hosking showed the scrapbook to my mother. Jim had it from Annie s widower, Charlie who was a neighbour of his and knew him to be interested in the history of the Boskenna estate.

Another curious aspect is that not long afterwards another vessel, the Abertaye, was stranded there, coming to rest alongside SS South America.

The French cargo ship Abertay was wrecked on October 14th, 1912, in Boskenna Bay near Penzance.
