fascinating reading and great pictures.I attended the Grammar school from 1959 to 1965 and remember Mr. Craske Rising vividly,he was an excellent headmaster and the school had such a good reputation. When he was away and Mr. Otto was 'in charge',things could slip!
Mr. Rising also lead english lessons and it was during one of these that he asked me what I thought was so funny;please sir nothing sir---see me afterwards.Gulp!.
He told me I had a face that would get me into trouble with the police!Happily ,this proved not to be so.
I was interested to read that he had been a jounalist as ,when he asked me once what career I thought I would pursue on leaving the school(I had no wish to go to university or teacher's training college as was the 'norm') I said journalism. Oh dear! He inflated himself to his full size and boomed out in a disapproving tone 'Journalism boy!'I went on to join the Civil Service and stayed with them for 30 years!
As can be seen by the note to my brother when he had an accident at the school, he could be a kindly man but for the most part he was a daunting figure only having to click his fingers to install fear into me and plenty of others. I had the impression he did not rate me highly but I had the sweet pleasure of receiving a prize from him at speech day for a grade 'A' at biology A level.happy days .Mike Forward
