Marconi, in 1921, claimed to have received radio messages from Mars on his experimental yacht the Electra while sailing in the Mediterranean.
(CandP d from a weird website, after googling Electra.) Apropos of nothing, really!

@ Penzancemaid - Glad you like it ; perhaps not apropos of nothing, what with the latest reports about Mars; actually, I have been re-assessing a previous picture of a private yacht in the gallery, which, at first sight I took to be the Medea, but after seeing the latest upload here of Electra, and making some proportional calculations as to size, I think that the first picture was of Electra. I need more details to be sure.

Your apropos has helped me to identify that ship in Penzance harbour; she was the Elettra (although we translate that as Electra), I now have the details in Italian to translate... more later on the picture in question.

I ve certainly learnt more about Marconi this afternoon than I knew before, including his engagement to Betty Paynter.
Once again, nothing to do with the above image, but what is life without a tangent or two..

It is tangents that invite further exploration and knowledge ... I do it all the time. Just about to make changes on the two pictures of the yacht.

I have a number, but I need to check though my bits and pieces of family memorabilia. and so on.

@ Penzancemaid, I assume she was a Penzance Betty Paynter? I know we had a contingent of Paynters here, and I also know an interesting tale.
