My great-great grandfather William Bollom Ludlow served on the Revenue Cutter Sylvia from 1831 to 1833 - cant quite make out the signature as to who signed the reference?
Brilliant, signed by Revenue Cutter Sylvia s Lt Commander. Sylvia served in waters around Mount s Bay a fair time; at one time under the command of Thomas Randle Forward of the family of Polperro area, the family moved to Penzance; they are descended from a family originally named Forehead, and the changed the name to Forward; excellent reference, in a time where employers hands were not tied to say anything other than their true feelings, a man had to prove his worth the hard way.
Well, the signature appears to be M Dupford, I gather that can be Dipford. He must have left later, as the commander in 1839 was Captain Brewer. I did have some info on the Sylvia some time ago, ooh 6 years ago or more, but it is buried in the files.
