Megalithic

Megaliths and associated lines have fascinated me for years. To have finally seen those at Callanish was a monumental experience. I first painted this scene as it was, then added the snow. At some time, I hope to get to Carnac and explore the geometry and connections there. Cornwall has many stones as well is known. It opens all manner of lines of thought.
I must look out some snaps I took on visiting Carnac in 1992 and see if there are any worth sharing with you - but these are teeth, aren't they, in a snowy gum?

Having had an interest in standing stones and alignments, ancient awareness of the land and sky around them is rather more than simple geometry; Victorian information gathering and the myth of the Rites developed the ideas; however, there is an unquestionable 'reality' and that is that stones of a crystalline structure are imbued with the thoughts and prayers of the ages, It goes beyond Aubrey Burl, Timpson and into Miller and Broadhurst ... but, when standing besides these odd standing forms, realising the effort and ingenuity involved in placing and erecting these stones, it becomes evident that this was a unified and massive collective force on the part of these people - it meant a great deal to them, Callanish is totally overwhelming.
