So ... what date is that? Vertical stem of a vessel named ....George. What was your grandad's reason for being there and in that photograph? Tell us his story...
I have no idea why he would have been in Newlyn, specifically.
At some stage he started work for GWR, first in Wales I think, then back home in Penzance. Prior to that he was a miner, working abroad in South Africa, I've got one of his sailing tickets somewhere, and in Levant, he was there in 1919. I was told that he was the last but one to get off the Man Engine, how true that is I do not know, but that's family stories for you.
Seems 1960s, I see a smart man in a bow tie, wearing a very smart hat and suit, standing with considerable pride. Definitely worth finding his story, I would say.
Very rough date - sorry to hear of his awful demise. I am trying to identify the ship, a help would be that fishing vessel, any chance of getting a bigger scan?
@wellb1931, maybe, but for now I am stuck with what appears to be a 1945 MFV in the distance, and she appears to be in Stevenson's colours. Maybe Girl Sibyl or Mayon Castle? I really would like to see a bigger scan.
