1918

A gathering in the Northeast corner of The Strand in 1918 (so writes my aunt).
Hugh Town, St Mary's.
A Gibson photograph
People are gathered waiting for someone to appear on the balcony of the large building.
Memory (or lack of it) prevents me from saying what the building was/is.
Besides the best sunday wear, I see a lot of RN caps.
It s a shame that we don t know the occasion! Celebration of the end of the First World War perhaps and an award of naval honours? Just a guess, of course.

Despite the numbers, WWI ended for most in 1919.
But it is possible; that building shows on the c1860 of Town Beach with shipbuilding.
I am sure a word with the Museum will bring out some information, when I get a chance.
I have quite a list for them....
