Wherry Mine - 1

Print of 1818, showing the original mine work that was destroyed;
began work in about 1705.
It's a strange thing. I could have sworn that this jetty was re-constructed about thirty/forty years ago temporarily for an investigation of the Lariggan Rocks but no doubt it was a vivid dream that contained the image of the pier. What is real, however, is that at exceptionally low tides, it is possible to clamber over the rocks and find the metal shaft/pipe which I have done twice.

I have found no record of that investigation pier. Let me know if you do see it. The shaft top has been cleared and photographed ... picture on site here.

There was a scaffold jetty erected out to the end of the
Lariggan rocks early 70's where they drilled down for samples which they were very secretive with..

Yes, I have seen the holes left on Lariggan Rocks, are they that recent, gosh!

Thanks for making me feel a sense of relief that I wasn't imagining that jetty, wellb! There must be a few pics lurking around of that I should think!

I guess Lariggan Rocks are about in line with the two ladies, I wonder what the investigation was?

There was some talk of a vein running across the bay from the penlee quarry area as I said they were very secretive with the findings. I did have some pictures
but they have gone with the time I'm sorry to say..

As a teenager I spent a bit of time at low tide out off the end of Lariggan Rocks. There was a sewage outfall that grey mullet swarmed about in the late spring and early summer. My best catch was a fine specimen of 5lbs 2oz and 2 drms. Littered around the rocks were several discarded scaffold poles and attachments that came from the jetty. I can confirm that it was not a pipe dream tpp.

I found a couple of the scaffold jetty thing in the late 1960s:
