West Cornwall Hospital

West Cornwall Hospital Penzance open day 25th September 2010.

Yeah yeah another corridor
I have see these views too many times in reality; besides what would you expect on an Open Day? :)

@treeve I spent years in this hospital as well, but the reason for the uploaded pictures wasn't because people wouldn't be familiar with what they see, rather that photography has been banned from hospitals for some time now and this was a good opportunity to document a large part of the hospital before too many of the scheduled changes take effect.

@Treeve.....I seem to remember the decor being a drab green when I was a child a rather frightening
sort of place the main entrance was opposite the bottem of Union Terrace which was in later years filled
in and became the kitchen area.........

My earliest memory was of a drab green, except the large ward in which I was kept when I was bitten by a horse fly. That was cream (the ward not the horse fly), filled with wonderful nurses guided by Matron. We have an apology for a matron these days and the whole thing is run by managers who have no medical awareness or concerns, mainly occupied by such questions as profit and beds and turn around time. Cleanliness was a matter of common sense, where now it is a necessity. I remember the Out Patients was run by Sister McCarthy, a magnificent lady with the power to heal, and a personality that would wrap anyone with the profound knowledge that they were in safe hands. Over the years I gained more sight of the wards as my aunts and uncles passed away (on both sides), then my parents and then my wife ... I have seen nurses and doctors change uniforms, change attitudes ... not a place where I want to see my last days ....

By the way @halfhidden, under what circumstances were you working there, at WCH? and for how long?

@treeve, I never worked at the hospital just spent my entire youth there. My mother was a nurse there and so I found myself in the hospital every weekend, evenings and summer holidays. I did help out the telephonist for some weeks (Bill) who had his office just at the top of the stairs of the main entrance.
I never went in to the medical trade unlike the rest of my family.
