Going down the 70 feet of winding stairs in the dark, out into the sunshine, across the rocky approach and climbing the 120 feet of a very worn path, which is now cut deep into crumbling rock (not the easy grassy path I remember from younger years), I arrive at King Charles' Castle.
An Artillery Fort built 1554-1555. Unfortunately the castle was very poorly sited. There was also a problem with the security at the rear from land attack landing from the West. There were two tiers of guns in the two storeys. Probably not effective ballistically.
