Forsooth and Odds Boddikins. It was bad enough when one day a hawker stood on my doorstep; after his cleaning spiel, he turned to the notice on my door and asked, 'what is a hawker?'

I see that these byelaws were begun in 1972; it should read 'good rule AND government', one wonders as to the legality of the sign if pressed.

Such byelaws, now common around the country, do not apply to political activity, which is guaranteed under statute law as a right to free expression.

My first reaction was 'is this a subtle way of saying a £1000 fine for kerb-crawling'! Then I thought better of it. No doubt they are trying to rid the town of timeshare lottery tickets, disco leaflets and the like, something you get regularly on the Spanish costas.
