Span of Time

From Newlyn, looking over Tolcarne towards Penzance.
1838 - 1913.
Two views over Tolcarne.
1838/9.
A sea wall fronts a pathway along the shore, leading from Penzance to Tolcarne.
An area of trees is set in front of South Terrace, the tower of the National School is seen
(I was given this scan by a learned person, who stated the drawing was of 1815 (?)).
Too much evidence points to a later date.
The Market House and St Mary's Church have been completed.
To the left of South Terrace, Voundervour lane peels off from the bottom of Queen Street - the old Grammar School can be seen, as can St Mary's Terrace and South Parade;
at the edge of the trees is Lariggan House, to the far left is York House (1825).
The topography of the sea-front is plainly that of a sandy shore [no, not Sandy Shaw].
Boats are pulled up on the shore at Lariggan, if that were shingle, the boats would not be there.
A raised path continues from Lariggan to what will become The Promenade.
This drawing was made, I have no doubt, to record the landscape before the advent of the covering of the Western Green sand hills
---
1913
Shown here is the New Road and the Convalescent Home, Bodilly's Mill, Lariggan Serpentine Works,
fading along the Promenade to Penzance itself.
In front the wide sand beach backed by fields, to the immediate left of the top of the solitary tree,
is the lantern light of the Newlyn Gallery.
The pleasure grounds were formed in 1914, on grounds given by Thomas Bedford Bolitho and CDN Le Grice in 1897
as a celebration of Queen Victoria's Jubilee year (stone on roadside of New Road);
the Grounds were formed at the expense of RF Bolitho (Borough Treasurer)
to commemorate the 300th year of the Grant of Charter.
I have uploaded a plan of the grounds and seaward path as built.
The grounds comprised tennis courts, bowling greens, refreshment pavilion, walks,
lawns, flower beds and shrubs, together with a sunken sheltered area.

A similar View from Newlyn can be found in Home > User galleries > denanmor > Newlyn 2009. I have forgotten how to link, maybe DNM can?. Anyway, what a excellent couple of pics!

Those old links are to coppermine database locations. Th e site needs to be overhauled to find the originals and re-set a lot of these.

Photos have moved around again, so my links do not work! :( Will have to look them up again some time...
