This is a picture taken of Sancreed School that was...has now been brought and no longer a School. Imagine my surprise when I visited 26 years later (today 19/07/08) and discovered the same school bell still outside and on the wall!! The School gate A bit rusty! but still there! and the playground ...WOW!! more pictures to come.

Sancreed school and area

Hi this is me (Sparky) and I’m giving you all the run down of Sancreed School in my experience which is now closed.

I went to Sancreed school and I always had to walk 1 and ½ miles to get there from where I lived, ( and back home again 3 mile round trip each day) through fields that were full of cows, and some times bulls come rain or shine! I remember that my mum had brought me and my brother some waterproofs to keep us dry I had red ones my brother had yellow ones, or vice versa! As I used to live in a cottage called Tregonebris…..

More about Tregonebris later. Please come back to see more about Tregonebris Farm and its history……this cottage is very old and has lots of history.

Sancreed school had if my memory serves me correctly around 20-30 pupils, and the school was spilt into two rooms infants and Juniors. The headmaster was called Mr Bond (not James) His first name is Christopher.

He was quite strict from what I remember and no one messed around in his class!. As the two rooms were split into two by white painted frames with clear glass in between you could see the other class room. When they were not covered in the children’s paintings and work that we had all done over the year.

The playground as you can see from the pictures is quite small, but we still had fun when it was playtime!!. Mrs Gladys Gendall used to work in the school and she would be on duty every day, watching over us children making sure that we were ok during our playtimes, a lovely woman, and me nearly thirty years on I now live just a few doors away from her! (Small world) and she has kindly given me this information….

Another teacher who I remember is called Debbie Spencer who joined Sancreed School after the teacher before her had left (she was called Miss Primrose Trembath and taught here for many years although I myself cannot remember her…

Debbie Spencer was well liked in the school from what I can remember….

Gladys Gendall was there until the very end! When it closed (have to find the date but I will hopefully.)

The School bell which you will see from the pictures we took today is still there! I was so overwhelmed at seeing it….and we were invited in to have a look around.

The door opened up and to the left were the coat hanger hooks still attached to the two walls, amazing! I could just picture my name at the side of the hook were I used to hang up my wet waterproofs! And when you turned around the tiny sinks! Yes the sinks are still there!!

I had completely forgotten about these until I saw them, under the window.

And the floor still has the square blocks now a faded magnolia colour. Which you can see in the picture of the sinks.

And the bigger playground with grass! (Please see the pictures.)

There used to be pond near the bottom of the playing area but has since been filled in, and It used to be very marshy there…. and to the right of the grassy playground, there is still the chain link fencing which has been there for many years this is where I remember playing tennis etc in.

And the last thing that I had to look at was the sports field for which I haven’t got any pictures of but I will be going back to take some. (So please come back to view these!)

The sports field is now overgrown to what it used to be like and now has a small children’s play park and two goal posts at either end of the field.

A very interesting afternoon out, for which my Mum thoroughly enjoyed as well ( Christine Hosken)

And I on behalf of my mum and Halfhidden would very much like to Thank you, Dennis Downing for your generosity and your time for us to view the inside of a school which is now your home, we were very privileged, thank you so much!! It is so very much appreciated THANK YOU!
It s hard to believe that this is a school at all. From this side it looks like a house duh
