Ricky, lead vocalist, and his silver wig

This pic was donated by Penzance musician Ricky Barnes himself and was taken at the Barn Club in about 1962. As can be seen, he was pretty cool in his silver wig and shades. The Layabouts were an out-and-out rock band and praised as such by Tom Jones when they played as support band for his act up in Pool, Redruth. Ricky went on tour outside the county as a solo artist later as well as playing many Cornish venues, pubs, halls etc., both as solo artist or with other bands.
Great Pic!! was this taken in the star bar? as they have two rooms.... my mum went to most of their gigs ! she loved them!! they look sooo cool!! laugh# laugh#

I was at the Tom Jones concert, what a night; also at the Acker Bilk night, stomping stuff. Massive talent around here there was. Ricky bought my valve harmonica from me, by the way. He lived just up the street from me. Used to spend Saturday at Fry s shop, with Geoff Marshall, checking out guitars and Amps, then into the Wimpy, when they made real burgers, and stacks of chips. Penzance is dead compared with then. My fingers are itching for the guitar....

Good Grief, Ricky Barnes!!! Now there's someone I have not thought about for a loooooooooong time!

He's still around town and lives in a once-was Police establishment, and has been a keen UKIP representative!

Played on stage with Ricky several times, unpredictable and a good laugh, you never knew what was going to happen next!! ::11:

Yeh! Playing in the Layabouts was a hoot all round!http://www.kernowbeat.co.uk Once there, go to the Bands and then clock on Layabouts in the list of 60's bands. I put together 'The Story of the Layabouts' and provided the photos to make it interesting. It's a great site and it's growing.

An interesting site tpp, I enjoyed reading about Ricky and the Layabouts. I used to babysit for Ricky and Ann in the early 70`s. He sang in the group `Rubbish`then.

@ missp Rubbish was Ricky, Terry Hamilton and Geoff Capper, after Rubbish, Terry, Geoff myself and two others formed smiler.

@symons, I remember Smiler, Rob Binnie was a member, I worked with his wife(ex now)

@missp, thats right,we kept Smiler going for 25yrs, also we had a pub trio going which was myself, Rob and Terry, we only stopped playing recently because of Terry having viral pneumonia, in my folder in members gallery you'll find the photos, the most recent was last year, a charity at the gig bar.
