Market Jew Street

A very popular view. Wonder which building it was taken from?
Judging by the cars, mid to late 1960 s I reckon. Possibly from the roof of what was British Home Stores?? Really nostalgic picture of Penzance when times were were still fairly innocent . Thanx for the memory. laugh# laugh#

When was the Barclays Bank building constructed? That would give a clue! You re welcome Duffy ::15:

I think Barclays Bank was originaly the Bolitho Bank back in the late 1890 s but I am sure Treeve will put me right on this. laugh# laugh#

Briefly (read the whole of it on my web page of the history of local banks); Established in 1807 as Mount s Bay Commercial Bank; 1834 moved to Market Jew Street as Mount s Bay Bank; A new banking house built 1863 at Nr 9 Market Jew Street for Bolitho and Son and Co. Note the date when Batten, Carne and Carne moved to Market House was 1864 (commenced with Richard Oxnam in 1795) and Dennis and Sons of Market Place was swallowed into the Bolitho bank in 1847.

@ Penzance maid I think Duffy meant Woolworth. The nearest we came to BHS was Dingles and the house of Fraser

Your right, I should have said International Stores which was just up from Woolworths, anyone remember that shop?? laugh# laugh#

One of the first jobs I had with Geoffrey Drewitt; I have no doubt that the wonderful marble floor has been ripped up by now - a full Barclays Eagle, security systems and anti-bomb grilles, anti bandit design windows .... kept me going anyway ...
