Market Jew Street and The Terrace was formed around 1812, from the grassy slope and narrow tree-lined cart track; here dated 1815, no paving and no railing. The roadway actually ran to the right, up the slope, before the Geological Society building was removed. The stream or leat can be seen running along the road between the fish-stalls, which became the subject of great concern over the health of the town, as it collected the waste from the abbatoirs. There were hardly any shops in Market Jew Street then.
