Wendy Lewis and Beryl Randle at Land's End after Billy Butlin's End

The ladies winner was 18 year old Wendy Lewis from Liverpool, who received 1000. The second lady home was Mrs Beryl Randle aged 31 from Walsall also received 1000 because of her bravery, she was leading with only 30 miles to go, but was forced to rest her swollen ankle at Camborne.

You'll notice Mrs Randle is wearing slippers in this picture, and who could blame her.
Wendy Lewis was a name to hold respect in those days ... I think she took to living in the castle on Carn Brea (Redruth) ?

I remember watching her together with a fair crowd, pass through Penzance in Market Jew Street by the Market House. Call it my imagination but I seem to remember that her sister, a sandy redhead, later ran a grocery in the Market House. Can anyone confirm?

I remember my mother was quite shocked at this young woman wearing trousers. Not a thing I d ever seen at that time. (But I was young and largely confined to Pendeen parish).
