Thanks, tpp. There are many to be caught yet. I have to keep tracking them before they all scamper off into the undergrowth or crumble away. I've found very few references to this part of our rural heritage anywhere. just checking this morning I find there is now available on-line a datasheet and photo-gallery of 'churn-stands' in the Yorkshire Dales. Not for this site but satisfyingly nerdy. Searching for churn-stands reveals that I am not as uniquely interested in these as I feared.
The Guild of Cornish Hedgers also have an interest in these, although I doubt some of those coddled together constructions I have seen would find their favour.
