St Ives Sparrow

The sparrow is declining dramatically and is now red listed. We are lucky here to have large familes of up to 50 birds, but it is vital to have chirping males; the numbers have fallen by 60% over the last 25 years, much of which occurred in 2005. Their diet of grain is now in decline as human use, coupled with extending housing and factory development, as well as the advance of mobile phones (according to some research) and a growing sparrow hawk population. This little lady posed at the Coastguard Station.
It seems to me they ve had a bit of a ressurgence the last two years but perhaps I m wrong but i hope not.

These little chaps and chapesses are the mainstay of our plant life, let alone the wonderful chirrups and activity; we have had slight increases in rural areas, but overall the figures are dropping; I look after two groups of 30 birds in my garden.
