St Patrick, patron of Ireland, is believed to have been taken to Ireland as a slave from Roman Britain. He is said to have returned to Ireland and to have converted the Irish to Christianity'. Traditionally, he demonstrated the concept of the Holy Trinity by means of the three leaves of the shamrock. It was Irishman Fr Young who achieved the building of a Roman Catholic Church in Penzance in 1843. As one would imagine, there is often Irish blood running through Catholic veins and so there is a popular devotion to St Patrick among Catholics.
