Taken from the Terrace, Market Jew Street looking down to the harbour between the Wimpy and Poundstretcher. Is this New Town Lane? Taken 7th January, 2009, on a very cold day.
Well, I believe it may once have been Stret Mighal (Street Mihale) which is Cornish for Michael s Street and even now it heads in the direction of St Michael s Mount. I know that Cyril Orchard fought a personal campaign against some names such as Gasworks Lane or Tesco Lane!
I do not blame Cyril at all. Sounds like 34 Railway Cuttings. In 1841, it was Newtown Lane and led out to the cliffs and lower edge of the harbour area (although there was no harbour wharfing there) as being the low section of the cliff edge, and the area was orchards and gardens alone.
