walking the cornish coastal path i came across this pole for want of a better word could someone please tell me what it was used for on top of the cliff edge it has what looks like a hole for some sort of handle on top and grooves for what have been some sort of ratchet on the side please could someone tell me what is was for thanks
sorry its on the coastal path between perrannuthanoe and prussia cove hope this helps also there are some chains on the ground next to this item
 
I have a number of old OS maps and books of antiquity, covering the period which springs to my mind, however they are all in safe storage; one thought covers look out for ships in difficulty, but why so large in diameter? Maybe someone can help you, looks VERY interesting.
 
yeah thanks i thought so its unusual to see something like this on top of a cliff nowadays thanks again though
