Part way down, a gap always fascinated, as to the reason for the opening, I never got a chance, perhaps BOP knows? photo 1957
I've always believed this to be a sluice, associated with the former smelter further downstream. There was a large pond behind this opening, which was completely silted up when I used to play in that area as a child. The remains of what appear to be the sluice gate mechanism still exist above this opening, although the pond itself was buried when the bypass was constructed.
