St Michael's Mount

The so-called Castle, which it has been since the Civil War turned it into a garrison, was once a satellite monastery of the twin island of Le Mont St. Michel, having become so some time after the Norman Conquest. St Michael the Archangel and recognised patron saint of Cornwall is said to have appeared to fishermen out in the bay in 495 a.d. from a lofty crag on the western side.
