RMS Mulheim with six crew on board ran aground north of Lands End at Pedn-men-du.
The crew of 5 were taken off the vessel by rescue helicopter and taken to Sennen Cove Lifeboat station
where they were met by ambulance staff to be treated for shock,
The master remained with his vessel which was carrying a cargo (2200 tonnes) of scrap car plastics.
The ship was holed and taking water, she lost all her supply of diesel fuel into the sea which was at a heavy 3 metre swell.
A full board was set up in Penzance to assess and control pollution by the cargo and the ship,
including Robin Middleton (Secretary of State), Wisjmuller Salvage, Owner and Insurers,
Counter Pollution and Salvage, Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Environment Group, Cornwall Sea Fisheries
and Coastguard Liaison Officer of Falmouth.
Attending the wreck were Lands End and St Just Coastguard Rescue teams, Sennen Cove lifeboat and inshore lifeboat.
Coastguard Emergency Towing Vessel Far Sky and tug Neftegaz 57.
A helicopter stood by to take the master off ship, which was done later.
A massive £2,000,000 clean up was put into operation.
