Penzance Synagogue

Off New Street, but best seen from Jennings Lane [now Street], is the old Synagogue. This building was erected in 1806; there is record of an earlier Synagogue built 1768, but I suspect that was on a lower site in New Street (somewhere by the St Michael's Housing). The new building remained in use until 1913, and it was then purchased by The Plymouth Brethren and used for a Gospel Hall. The building backs on to a part of The Star Inn premises which used to be Number 1 New Street. All original features of the Synagogue were dispersed, the same is true of The Gospel Hall. The rooms are now in the Star Inn.
