Newlyn c1900

It is Newlyn, but not as I know it; can anyone say just where this is?
interesting picture. Just wandering if this picture was taken whilst in a frame because of the reflection on the roof or is that Cornisjh cement wash... I know Newlyn well but am finding it hard to place this... My first reaction would be the Combe or Tolcarne.

No, this is the picture, as is, the lines are shadows on the roof and chimney from early morning sun, and the one on the right is cement wash. Probably beginning to slip. I would say the building to the right of the coach and team is an Inn. I am wondering if that area of cottages is now a car park, behind the chippie area.

If I had to put money on this I would say that this was where the Coombe road meets the Strand on the corner of Jack lane. That would make Chywoone hill is visible in the distance. Those men are waiting for work I guess. And in Newlyn there was little other than fishing. It s possible that there was a stable nearby because of the taxi... and I know that one existed on this location. Are you absolutely sure this is 1900ish ?

It is from an album of between 1880 to 1910; somewhere in that area was a serious flood. The photo needs a lot of cleaning up. The stretch down the Coombe was rebuilt to what we see now. I have some more old pics of fishermen and boats to come. I cannot tally this picture with my maps though. I know where the skyline should be. But buildings have changed so much and the harbourfront.

Can you send me a better image? Or is this as good as it gets? I agree that things have changes a lot especially on Chywoone hill... the reason I asked about the date was that I recollect some buildings on the hill being built about the turn of the centenary. I cannot remember the date the boarding school was built but I m sure it would have been close to 1900. If that is true then Chywoone would have been populated before this picture was taken and more properties would be visible....Sorry in that mode...;)

I ll see what I can do .. the hills are a bit hazy, I ll see if I can pull out any detail ... the original is in a sorry state; I was given a CD of these very old photographs, the family did not want to let go of the originals.

Could be the car park, with the house on the left being Duke Street cafe (was Gallery) facing the car park.

Now sorted ... The Inn is The Swordfish; the cottages have been replaced by The Co-Op etc. I now estimate this photograph to be date 1890, when the lifeboat slip was being built (the boards are to enclose the space); the view is from the Strand.
