The width of road is one of historical basis. The place was two lanes, divided by a grassed area. At the end of the grass strip, roughly where the roundabout island stands was a Forge. The area from the forge to the west was a space for a Fair. To the North (opposite the space now occupied by Buriton House) and across the 'Alverton Street/ Lane' to the immediate west of what is now the Municipal Buildings, was Wombwell's Menagerie. This whole area was given over for public gatherings and entertainment.
