Battering

The wind had dropped by high tide, The Pool and Monument on their green-schist headland stood against the wind and sea; the harbour (built 1771 to replace the ancient harbour) stands, but shakes with each mass of water that hits it; remember how much it takes to handle a bucket of water, how many buckets are being hurled at these bastions of rock and stone? But they seem nothing but a featherweight to Nature.
