These date from First World War, possibly put in when the battery was re-installed to defend Penzance; these were used anywhere that needed a firm strong brick that could take impact, such as the explosives factory at Hayle Towans, which I believe also dates from around 1915. They are fired so hard that they become almost like solid glass.
