My thought was that he must be in a Reserved Occupation, or he s swaggering about to hide the fact of being given a white feather. Pure conjecture, utter rubbish probably.
Notice the boats moored just offshore, prior to world war 2 Joe Legg had a fleet of punts for hire off the promenade each summer they
were named after ships of the navy the heaviest being The Hood there was also motor fishing vessels namely Francis the Maggie and
the Queen of the Bay the motor boats I believe were taken by the navy in 1940 for use at Dunkirk...
None of those names are on the adls website database .. I will check the fishing vessel records during this week. If they were not used for Dunkirk, they may have been requisitioned for other duties - I have most of them listed.
Its a fair journey from Penzence up through the channel to northern France but I think we were perhaps led to believe it....in those days
loose lips sank ships
They were either carried, or under escort until they reached the port of departure .. Even if the enemy heard any loose lips they were so paranoid because of the bluff and double bluff of our intelligence agencies that many facts sat in files for the duration. So many attacks and operations succeeded because of their tireless work.
