Most West families look set to be snubbed over plans to help rural areas with the soaring price of fuel. The Government confirmed last night it wants to bring in a pilot scheme of a 5p a litre duty discount in remote areas.
But while the Isles of Scilly will be included, along with the Hebrides and Northern Isles off Scotland, other remote parts of the Westcountry are expected to miss out.
Treasury Minister Justine Greening told MPs the coalition recognised “the price of fuel has been a very difficult issue for motorists, businesses and families”.

She said the Government was considering a fuel stabiliser, to protect people from the effects of volatile prices, and that the Chancellor would make any announcements in next month’s Budget.
Ms Greening added: “We do want to treat motorists fairly. At the same time we know that we have to act responsibly and ensure that we tackle our record national debt and the financial deficit.”
Shadow Treasury minister Kerry McCarthy said: “The Government made all the right noises about tackling high petrol prices before the election. They led the public to believe they would take action to slash fuel duty and bring down the price of petrol at the pumps but since then they’ve done nothing.
“Actually that’s not quite true – they’ve done nothing to implement the fuel duty stabiliser which they made such a song and dance about before the election but they have hit the motorist by whacking up VAT to 20 per cent.
“They’ve increased petrol prices and not cut them.”
She asked why the islands were chosen for the pilot scheme “Do you not think it’s quite difficult to extrapolate from pilots carried out in island areas how such a scheme would work in remote mainland areas?”

I remember when you were unlikely to see a car on the islands - you can walk anywhere in no time at all! Nothing to do with the Duchy?
