Western Hotel. In 1826 Clarence Street was formed, having demolished a large ruined house, which was situated on Alverton Lane, in 1824, and a new building was put up, which became an Inn run by a Mrs Drown; by 1851 it was known as The Western Hotel; 1861 it was run by William Mitchell until 1891 and handed on to his nephew F W Mitchell; In 1927 it as described as an old established hotel replete with every modern comfort . I was washing my boss s(Mr Roy Jenkin)car in the Western Hotel car park while England were winning the World Cup in 1966, soI missed all the excitement, Icould hear the cheering from the folks watching in Curry s and other TV shop windows.
