Polwithen Lodge

At the corner of Green Bank and Kings Road stands Polwithen Lodge. This picture was taken 1975
Picture supplied by John Gendall
This is the lodge belonging to the polwithen parkestate, its mansion was created by william bolitho. It dates from c1870

Polwithen Lodge Belonged to the Rodda family for quite sometime I worked for Billy Rodda late 50s he ran his Fathers Butchers shop in Market Place at the top of the steps by Davys Monument until he retired. Brian Richards

I think I have that on my set of pictures - there is a mystery however. It is reported that there is a tunnel which apparently leads off up the hill, in the direction of the main house, at an angle roughly in line with the slope of the hill. Whether this is the remains of a waterway, or ice room, or other, is not known; I have my own doubts about it being a tunnel connecting with the house as servant access, or even Mr Bolitho s use - we made no discoveries when the estate was being developed or in later excavations; then there is the small matter of the underground stone cliff (from which the quarry had been cut to obtain the stone for the house and hedging). Do you have anything to add to the solution of this mystery?

That s ok, it is one of the mysteries that I have on my list, just in case of a possibility of some little hint having been heard. The Roddas had taken over a great area of the Estate in the early days of the breakdown of the land. I did not realise they had kept the Lodge for so long.

hi the tunnell does exist as it was a route for the pirates to take thier booty from the sea front to the main house where it was stored out of the way of the customs

The tunnel does exist, I know a person who has seen details, but neither house nor tunnel existed in 'pirates' times' or in smuggling times'. It perhaps was used as a part of the grounds ice store, or a water course, as the hills are a source of water. There was a hint of there having been a rough carriage for getting supplies up the hill to the house (Polwithen), a form of tram on a rope pull, but no evidence had been found in the house.
