1875

The Promenade 1875, as photographed by C R Lobb of Wadebridge.
Here we have a lucky fact in that it was taken in the year that an Ordnance Survey map was produced.
Note the original railing, the original width of the Promenade walkway. [viz=Notes elswhere on site.]
Behind the two carts can be seen a row of low cottages, later to become demolished and The Winter Gardens with Terrace Restaurant built [viz]; rising above those is Alexandra Terrace.
On The Esplanade opposite the end of Cornwall Terrace are the Public Baths[viz]. The area obscured by the baths was known as Western Green' to the left is The Coastguard Station[viz].
Lots of manure to be had for the taking.
Morrab Road had not yet been cut through, but there was a lane just at the side of Mount's Bay Hotel, which only went as far as South Place (Folly).
The old promenade and road from Wherrytown to Newlyn should be visible as it wasn t swept away until 1880. Can t quite make it out though. Are there any pre-storm pictures of this road anywhere?

I can see it on the original (just), I have a map of the area, and later plan of the area. I have seen an early elevated picture of it (from Newlyn) - I will try and find it later ... few more pics to come in this set.
