Polweath Green Treneere: Plans That Never Happened

The long-running saga over a community centre at Polweath Close in Penzance came to a head in 1990. The Treneere Residents’ Association had applied to place two large mobile cabins on the green, aiming to provide a space for youth activities and community events.

Residents, however, were strongly opposed. Over 180 people signed a petition, and placard-waving protestors argued that the green was completely surrounded by houses and that a temporary centre would be a “terrible eyesore” with no soundproofing. Protest leader Jesse Triggs called the plans “totally inappropriate” and welcomed the news that they were to be dropped.

For years, the Residents’ Association had fought to secure a permanent community centre, originally hoping to use the Princess May recreation ground instead. Chairman Carol Bosworth expressed her disappointment:

“All we’re trying to do is to protect the kids and give them something to do, but now it looks like three years of effort have gone down the drain.”

With Polweath Green off the table, the site eventually found a different fate. The land was finally developed, and the area became Davy House, a residential development that replaced the contested green. While the community centre dream never materialised here, the story of Polweath Green remains a reminder of how local planning battles can shape the neighbourhood — and how some proposals, no matter how well-intentioned, never make it past the drawing board.
