The cold snap as seen in Penzance, Jan., 2010
It's a redwing in my garden. Today I walked to Heamoor to pay my newsagents' bill and saw lots of these and also flocks of fieldfares. They both belong to the thrush family. They only tend to show up here when trying to escape extreme cold. In other words, you know conditions are bad elsewhere!!

Think we had one of these in our garden too - I wasn't sure what it was at the time, but it also had the red on its wings and about the size (roughly) of a thrush. Anyone spotted any penguins yet?!

@ tt13. If you can manage a stroll in Penlee Park in weather like this you will see lots of redwings. They are always around about but are usually a movement that you see in the corner of your eye in the undergrowth. What I have not seen or heard this time around are lapwings they are usually seen on roundabouts or in fields huddled up in extreme conditions like this. It is a good idea to rake up the edges of your garden to benefit blackbirds, robins etc who are all members of the thrush family. Put out fat balls and seed for tits and finches.

Loads of these in my tiny front garden strip today, digging up the earth to find bugs. So many different birds on the enclosed bit at the Newlyn end of Newlyn Green all looking for food.

@ CW: Unusually, I saw a single lapwing/green plover/peewit (strangely isolated from a flock) flying over the houses in Treneere. I have heard in recent years that they are dangerously in decline. Today, I have seen flocks of fieldfares and redwings both in the air and in my garden pecking around. I also saw a beautiful black redstart on the Presbytery wall in Rosevean Road and a blackcap in a bush, all birds I haven't seen much of. usually.

@ tpp. Good spot on the black redstart. Sadly you are correct with the lapwing being in decline as it is now on the RSPB 'redlist'. We have a blackcap who has visited our front garden on a regular basis over the winter. We are blessed with a variety of birds and other wildlife around here and luckily get time to view it. missp and I watched a stand off between a black cat and a fox late yesterday afternoon, the cat won by the way. We frequently see a badger that visits the grounds rumaging for grubs and worms instead of the usual dead one at the side of the road.
