Approaching New Grimsby. Great Pool, a freshwater lake half mile long, Fish be Here.
To the left, Middle Downs - to the right wends Abbey Road, which leads to Penzance Road.
The Ponds are natural and of ancient date. They are protected at each end by 'an evergreen bank abounding in camomile flowers, which disperse a very agreeable odour, and the land on either side is cultivated to the water's edge' as Courtney put it in 1845. He also reports that Mr Smith had erected a steam mill on the far end of the Pool for local inhabitants to have their corn ground instead of having to send it to the mainland. Gone are the fields to be replaced by reeds.
