Newlyn 1893

Undated photograph, Seawall destroyed(1881), New Road built(1882), Convalescent Home built(1893) no growth in grounds so must be new, North Pier initial work completed(1886), no road across harbour(1908), Lidden all fields, no Art Gallery(1895). Tolcarne expanded including 'Art Gallery Terrace'. Photograph unsigned, from book 'Penzance and Neighbourhood', published anonymously in various editions ranging from 1887 until 1910 (I have two versions of this book, each with different contents). No photographers noted, but some recogniseable as Francis Frith and Co. This one is most likely a Francis Frith.
Make sure that you view this picture enlarged.
The whole Art Gallery Terrace business is very confusing treeve! It looks like it could be there in this picture, but I couldn t say 100%. However, if you have a copy of Clive Carter s Port of Penzance (which I m willing to bet you do!) take a look at the photo on the top of page 11 dated 1895 where Art Gallery Terrace definitely has not been built (except the lower half which is much older). It is a great photo (as is the one you have posted) and I wish it could be included on the site.
It is good to see in the photo above the continuation of the sea wall out from where the statue is now located, showing the old road.

This is such a perfect picture, I could almost weep with pleasure. Absolutely wonderful. It means a lot to me to see such views.

@denanmor - I have a copy of that same photograph from a different source. I am not at all certain of whether or not I can upload it, but the one in Clive Carter s book most certainly cannot. I regret that not all things that are read in books are necessarily correct - for example - one claims a particular etching is dated 1832-4, however it clearly includes the Market House of 1837. All I am saying is that we need to be careful in dating. I have just come across another reference that states The Convalescent Home as being completed in 1893, rather than the date that I was previously given. Either way, it looks like I have to do more work on this for you.
Bear with me.

1893. “Edward Bolitho” Convalescent Home, Laregan, erected and endowed by Mr. T. Bedford Bolitho, of Trewidden.
From West Penwith Resources.

That date confirms the Health records, serves me right for not checking myself. Just found it in PAS Pool, 1893. That puts a different date on the picture. Right, from now on in, I am checking everything myself. Thankyou Penzancemaid.

@denanmor - The picture that you mention has been of interest to me for some time, as one day when I get a lot of pennies and I sign the official secrets act, I hope to get a proper copy from Penlee. There is a feature in the centre of the old seawall area that intrigues me. Anyway - I concur with the date of 1895, as Penzance Club has been completed.

@treeve- The Clive Carter picture was, amazingly, taken from almost exactly the same place that I took this photograph ! From comparing the two, and going by your confimation of the date of 1895, I can say without doubt Art Gallery Terrace was not there and must have been built after this date. Therefore, it can not be in the above picture if it is dated as 1893. This confirms my belief that the Art Gallery was built first, then the terrace that used its name.

I have not looked closely at the area on site I have to admit, but now looking at the detail of your picture that you have linked, I can see where the problem lies. There is another row of houses behind Art Gallery Terrace, One day when I have time, it would be worthwhile getting hold of the 1962 OS and comparing it with the pictures and walking around the area.
