NEW MEETS THE PAST - June, 1977

I believe this was one - if not the very last - of the final passages to be made by RMV Scillonian (II) to Scilly from Penzance, and all the more momentous for the fact that, seen on the right, is RMV Scillonian (II) having just met and passed the newly commissioned RMV Scillonian III on the left.
The following slide in my collection taken in the evening after a day trip to St Martin's, shows the Queen celebrating her Silver Jubilee from the balcony of Buckingham Palace, on our television in a boarding house at Pelistry, St Mary's. (If that should provide a clue to the precise date.)
That is right, quay factor is low tide, which means that the St Mary s Sound has to be used, not The Road. Copy your notes across now ...

With the picture the other way round now since it was a scanned transparency. This may mean the Scillonian II was returning to Penzance, not just arriving! Sorry to have lost Denamor s and BOP s comments on the first upload in the process.

Classic Picture - showing Scillonian (II) entering the harbour area, and Scillonian III leaving for Penzance via St Mary s Sound. Because the second Scillonian was never officially named Scillonian II she is notionally called Scillonian (II) , the first Scillonian being renamed Peninnis, to ensure that Shipping Registers only had the one name on record. This is why Scillonian III is so named, to recognise the fact that there were actually three. The others gave such good account of themselves (as well as Queen of the Isles), that any talk of a new vessel must look to be rather stretching things, particularly since a fourth vessel has been discussed since 1996. This present one of Scillonian III was refitted in 1998, and has been fully serviced since that date.
