Natterjack toad (1) - Seen 10/02/2010

I met this little fella going up Richmond Hill to catch the train back to Penzance. Wouldn't you like to know what happened when I kissed him!

Seriously though, this natterjack toad is largely nocturnal. Sandy places including heaths and dunes are preferred and, like this one, he often runs instead of crawling or hopping. The call is harsh and has been likened to a football rattle. My book tells me that on their own, frog and toad are rather vague terms and which one is used for a given species really depends only on superficial appearances. Thus frog is generally employed for agile, smooth-skinned animals, while toad is reserved for the slower warty forms. I am not certain of my identification here.
thats defo a frog, a big fat female full of spawn ::6:, toads have a rounder head, not pointy, toads have warty dry skin not wet smooth skin and toads don`t really have webbed rear feet, brill photo though
