Day Trip to Scilly - 20th April, 2007

Parallel to Land's End, - and Cape Cornwall beyond where the Irish Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and the Channel converge to make it a cape by definition - this is where the motion of the sea can often begin to upset some stomachs on the outward journey to St Mary's.
Not quite reached the Runnelstone Buoy, furthest rock is The Armed Knight, a little further on, near Wolf Rock, seven sea currents meet, and if there is a strong breeze, with a good ocean ground swell, the water collects to somewhere about six feet or more above normal (it is in any case between four and six feet, uphill, at that point due to currents); it is then that the ship begins to pitch and yaw, separating the sheep from the goats. The first rule is not to go below, unless you have to do so. The second rule is to stand if possible, and try and keep the horizon level to your eyes. Sailor s gait is defined by that ability.
Sea sickness is more a state of mind than anything. :!:

My father joined the Royal Navy as a young lad, but discovered that he and ships did not mix. Unlike his brother Basil. Mind you - he had his problems. But that was WWII for you.

As a very junior engineer I looked on the ships log at previous voyages to get some idea of the distant places my new home might be taking me. There was one trip that caught my attention when the ship had left Takoradi for Lefo, but changed course and went to Amsterdam instead. Lefo sounded interesting - Baltic? - Mediterranean? - the atlas had no reference to this mysterious place. Later I found out that when a ship leaves with a cargo bound for Europe for practical / financial reasons the destination sometimes isn’t settled , in this event the captain is instructed to set a course to “Lands End For Orders”.
So that was where Lefo was - I had already been there - on the bus.
