Alfred Smith and Son premises - bottom of Clarence Street, firm has its origins in 1811; These premises occupied 1841 by John Hamilton builder, and John
Pollard, wheelwright; 1851- 1870 Francis D. Lugg Master Upholsterer; Messrs. White and Bennetts, Cabinet-makers joining them in 1863; 1893 Olver and Sons, cabinet manufacturers and china dealers; It is said that Criddle and Smith took over in 1880; Alfred Smith (no relative) was manager in 1909, and took over the firm in 1912. This photo assumed c1905.
