Pied Wagtail

Can you tell the difference between pied wagtails which are a subspecies especially in our neck of the woods, I read, and white wagtails? I can't.

"The rump of the White Wagtail (Motacilla alba) is grey and the rump of the Pied Wagtail (Motacilla yarrellii) is black, which is the only absolute reliable field character for these two races at all times." ......................But, to answer your question, No I couldn't have told you the difference before I looked it up. Just one of the birds that can be very difficult, the males differ slightly from the females, then there is variance in colour from summer and winter. And to be honest Tpp i looked up some pictures of the two species, and some birds are very different and some are very similar.
