Ruth came out of the water today onto the slip at Newlyn Harbour. She is having her annual hull survey tomorrow and will have her anodes replaced and her hull cleaned before returning to the water and Penzance Harbour on Friday, 7th April.
Anyone wishing to view the fantastic copper plating on Ruth's hull should come and visit Newlyn Harbour over the next couple of days.
Ruth is a beautiful gaff-rigged sailing ship built in 1914 in Sweden to trade in the Baltic and is now used as part of a sailing holiday business based in Penzance.
An expression ... 'Copper bottomed value' ... copper or yellow metal was added to the hull to prevent wood boring marine 'beetles' some of which could comfortably excavate through many inches of harbour timbers. I meant to have a look at her on the slip, many thanks for this.
Thanks all for the information. I spotted her, (how could I miss?) yesterday as I drove past to an appointment, was intrigued but had no time to stop. Now I'm 400 miles away again and the answer pops up on my screen. Wonderful; good old PicPZ!
