Wedding Cake chosen by the Mr and Mrs Hall of Gulval in 1964 made by the Co-op in Causewayhead, Penzance for £12!!!! How much would you think a cake like this would cost today? £200 - £300?
My father-in-law was a master baker, he specialised in wedding and christmas cakes, he only used the very best ingredients, and he spent a week in decorating, the detail was fantastic; his daughter learned from him, I helped with general preparation and design; in the end I found that I was capable of making a good christmas cake and a birthday /wedding cake (quite different mix); I can even ice a cake, if I put my mind to it (none of yer roll out paste or icing, all smoothed by hand tools). I ll see if I can find any pictures of my wife s cakes.
My wife used to say that I could cook a better chinese meal than in any restaurant - she said we only went out so I could have a night off. I got original books from Beijing, and researched the sauces. It s fun, worth all the preparation.
My policy all round is to have a go - never rode a bike or drove a car, never owned either, but can cope with most things, I guess.
missp and myself once made and decorated celebration cakes for different occasions usually for family and close friends. Many hours, late nights and some chosen choice words, but always a sense of achievement and satisfaction when completed.
Absolutely - I think that we are all capable of doing most things, my mother had a rule - if you can read you can cook;
My grandfather Thompson also like DIY ... he said get on with it ... I have never been afraid to lift the lid and have a go .
That is how I learned to repair guitar amplifiers, televisions and transistor radios, etc ... The satisfaction is immense.
