Penzance

Arms of the Borough of Penzance
Granted by The College of Arms 12th June 1934; including Gulval s Lamb and Flag, Madron s Maltese Cross, St Peter s Cross and Keys, St Andrew s Cross, Newlyn and Paul represented by St Paul s Cross; surmounted by the Ship and Crown of St Anthony (of Penzance); supported by a Pirate (an allusion to the the 1879 opera The Pirates of Penzance) and the stalwart Fisherman. The motto is taken from the Charter of 1614 - For the reward of the good and the dread and terror of the bad. The symbolism of the omission of the St John s Head from this device is that this was now the New Borough.
