I see, very interesting ... maybe a test chamber, then? There is a good lot of information on the net, but I suspect your best bet is the Historic Environment Team, Truro.

during WW2 the Towans was a firing range from Phillack almost to Gwithian not only a rifle range they fired off mortars too
